Writing the Report
The report should be roughly 10 pages long (excluding tables, charts, and graphs) and have the following sections:
1.Introduction/History: This section should briefly describe the history of the company and how it has grown over the years (i.e., expansion, mergers and acquisitions, etc.). Please limit this section to one page.
2.Income Statement Analysis: This section should compare the current fiscal year operations to the prior year. Focus should be on the changes in various line items and earnings per share and the reasons for the changes. In addition, this section should address any material changes to the common size income statement between the current fiscal year and the prior year.
3.Cash Flow Analysis: This section should summarize the current year’s cash flows only. Focus should start with net cash flows from operation and explain the other significant sources and uses of cash (such as capital expenditures and debt issuances/ repayments).
4.Balance Sheet Analysis: This section should summarize any significant changes in balance sheet items from last year to this year and why they occurred. (Note that the changes in the balance sheet stem in large part from your analysis of cash flows.) In addition, this section should address any material changes to the common size balance sheet between the current fiscal year and the prior year.
5.Ratio Analysis: This section should compare the financial ratios of your company for the past two years, as well as compare the current ratios to either industry averages or another competitor.
6.Stock Price Review: This section should evaluate changes in the company’s stock price over the last two years (Chart 1) and compare the trend to the S&P 500/NASDAQ and an industry competitor (Chart 2). What could be the reasons for the stock price changes? Is your analysis consistent with the change in the stock price?
7.Conclusion: This section should bring together the preceding sections and provide a future outlook for your company, including an investment decision (buy, hold, or sell).
The report must be word-processed, tables should be prepared in a spreadsheet software package, and charts/graphs should be utilized where pertinent. The reports will be graded on content, communication, and flow. Remember, while it is reasonable for groups to divide the work by section, it is imperative that the entire group review the final report to ensure that all of the sections are integrated and there is a smooth transition between sections. Assignments that contain gross proofreading errors or that do not flow properly will be penalized at the instructor’s discretion. Please remember to have the name of the company and the team members on the cover of the report.
