Communication Analysis/Reflection

This assignment is designed to help you realize the importance of interpersonal communication in relationships. You will apply interpersonal communication theories and concepts to a communication interaction depicted in a film or television program.

Choose a brief (3-9 minutes) scene from a film or a television program in which interpersonal communication is key. Select a scene where the communication issues presented are ones which are important to your life. The scene should demonstrate competent or incompetent communication or a combination of both. Select a scene with only two characters or focus your analysis on two of the characters in the scene (The scenes from CRASH, Game of Thrones, and The Break Up should serve as examples.)

Analyze the communication in the scene using course concepts and theories. Be careful to include a discussion of whether the communication is competent (effective and appropriate) or not. If communication is incompetent, what communication changes would you advocate? You might also want to explore the ethical dimensions of the communication.

Write an Analysis/Reflection and post it to the Discussion Board. Classmates will be able to read the Analysis and provide feedback.

  1. The Analysis/Reflection should be 4-6 pages in length.
  2. The Analysis/Reflection should have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
  3. A synopsis of the movie should be a SMALL portion of the Analysis/Reflection. The majority of the Analysis/Reflection should be the examination of the interpersonal communication that you uncovered in the movie scene.
  4. Carefully identify, analyze, and explain what communication behavior was competent (effective and appropriate) and what was not. Identify what communication behavior could have been used to be more competent. Explore the ethics of the communication choices.
  5. Make observations on what you have learned about your own communication from your scene analysis.
  6. Make observations on why it is important that your audience reflect upon this analysis.
  7. Use bold type for all course content terms. USE COURSE CONCEPTS. PUT THESE TERMS IN BOLD PRINT AND INCLUDE A DEFINITION IN ( ).
  8. Include a link to the television or movie scene.

Suggestions for Organizing the Analysis/Reflection

I Introduction

  1. Gain attention
  • This could be done with a quote or humor or a rhetorical question.
  1. State Central Idea/ Thesis
  • What is the major focus of your presentation? This should be written as a declarative sentence and not a question. It should be concise, specific, and concrete. The following are examples:
  • In all romantic relationships we will have arguments. Fighting fair, with a focus on empathy and listening, will allow us to have healthier and more satisfying relationships.
  • -Developing a strong intimate relationship requires that we disclose to the other and be willing to receive feedback.
  • Applying for a job will undoubtedly require that we be interviewed. Competent communicators utilize concrete, precise and specific language in interviews, and impression-establishing nonverbal communication.
  1. Introduce Movie/ Television Program

-Movie and scene selected

-Provide context (Physical, Social, Historical, Psychological, Cultural) for the scene. Only enough to help the audience understand the scene being viewed.

-Attach film clip

II Body of Presentation

Select an organization structure that best covers the course content you will be discussing in your analysis. The key questions you want to address are:

What is the Competent Communication displayed by Character #1?

What is the Competent Communication displayed by Character #2?

What is the Incompetent Communication displayed by Character #1?

What is the Incompetent Communication displayed by Character #2?

What could Character #1 do to be more competent?

What could Character #2 do to be more competent?

These questions can be addressed in any order you believe best. Do use transitions and new paragraphs to organize your ideas into understandable units that the Reader can easily comprehend.

Use course content in every identification. Use bold type for the terms and include a paraphrased definition in ( ).

The goal is to utilize a minimum of 10-15 terms in total. Ideally this would be 5-8 terms used for each character: 1-3 for Competent Communication, 1-4 for Incompetent Communication, and 1-3 for Suggestions for Improvement. The focus should be on a quality in-depth communication analysis and this may mean that one character is analyzed more deeply, and more terms are used for this one character.

III Conclusion

-Summary. In two to three sentences review the key points of your presentation.

– So What? Answer the questions: What did you learn from your analysis of this communication? What should we learn for our analysis of this communication? Why is knowing this important?

-Final Statement. Wrap up with a strong final sentence. Try to connect this to how you opened the Analysis/Reflection.

Part 2

After posting your initial analysis, you are to respond to at least three other group member’s posts. each of these posts should include the following:

A) Compliment to specific content presented. This could be insightful ideas, quality of writing, or quality of thinking.

B) Question to produce more explanation and/or deeper exploration.

C) Comment on the ideas presented and where you identify your thoughts.

D) Connection to course content whether in the textbook or another article found on the Internet.

These four components may be in any order.
