MY RESEARCH TOPIC: Assessing the relationship between depression and anxiety from the perspective student academic performance

Research Aim: Emotional disturbance is considered to be a psychological element that can lead to the deterioration of the daily activities of students. Since, academic achievements are an integral dimension of students’ lives, depression, anxiety and other forms of emotional disturbance might lead to poor academic performance. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to assess the relationship between depression and anxiety on student academic performance.

STUDENT ONE:

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals from various age groups, in various stages of development, to various degrees, and to various extents. Its treatment also involves the use of various methods, that are generally catered to the individual and their individual needs. It has been found that behavioral therapy is the most effective means of treating ADHD, but it is a method of treatment that involves a multitude of treatments and interventions. My research proposal will focus on these various treatments and interventions, to identify which treatments or interventions prove to be most effective in the treatment of ADHD.

Some of the most widely used forms of behavioral therapy in the treatment of ADHD, include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), social skills interventions, family-based interventions/behavioral therapy, classroom behavior management, and academic interventions. In order to assess the effectiveness of these treatments across the varying age and developmental groups, I would like to complete a metanalysis. The metanalysis will involve the examination of at least twenty studies that identified various behavioral therapy treatments that proved most effective in the treatment of ADHD. The metanalysis will then identify the effect of each variable or treatment in the population or group.

A metanalysis is defined as a set of statistical procedures for combining the results of a number of studies in order to provide a general assessment of the relationship between variables (Bates & Cozby, 2012). Generally, it involves examining the results of each study, to determine the reliability of the findings, by studying such important factors as effect size, confidence intervals, and significance levels. These numbers are then compared using various statistical procedures, in order to find an average that confirms or disconfirms its reliability.

A metanalysis would be considered a quantitative approach to research, in that it involves the use of numerical data that is analyzed using statistics, that often provides a clear estimate of the effect of a variable in the population. Its advantages include its ability to interpret larger sample sizes, which leads to greater statistical significance and generalization to the population. It is also a means for being considered evidence based. Some critics consider it to be error prone, because the data provided from the studies may not be cohesive or they may provide data that is not entirely accurate. Overall, metanalysis is considered a reliable method of research, to identify and examine the precise effects of a variable (Rosenthal & Rosnow, 2013).

STUDENT TWO:

The research question that is guiding the development of my project is: “What are the impacts of parental deployments and frequent moves on the mental health of children and adolescents in military families?”

For this project, my research will be focused on qualitative research. I plan to utilize this research approach to gain a better understanding of the opinions and thoughts from military families on how the military lifestyle impacts their children’s mental health. Qualitative research provides insights into a problem or helps researchers develop ideas and hypotheses. The methods that I plan on using include interviews and/or surveys. When using interviews/surveys a random sampling would be conducted to gather participants from a large population (military families). This would help prevent sampling bias, as military families can range from lower ranking to higher ranking, educational status, number of children, etc. This study could even utilize stratified sampling if I wanted to break down military families into subgroups, such as dual military, single parent in the military, same-sex families, families with a certain number of children, families that have children with educational or medical needs, etc.

A thematic analysis could then be conducted on the survey responses to identify if there are any patterns or themes. According to Miller, (2020), thematic analysis includes three steps that have the researcher diving deep into the research results to assess any potential patterns or themes. It is important to group data like themes, and code the data appropriately. This gives the researchers an opportunity to have the survey questions grouped together under broad themes. In the case of mental health of military children and how it relates to deployments and frequent moves, surveys that provide open-ended questions give me and other researchers the opportunity to have more detailed information and doesn’t lead the participant to respond in a specific manner. There are both strengths and weaknesses to surveys and surveys with open-ended questions. Participants may feel more apt to answer short closed questions on a survey compared to those that are open-ended that ask for thoughts and opinions. Participants may not feel comfortable sharing their personal feelings and views.

Research that utilizes surveys as a data collection instrument need to make sure they are reliable and valid. According to Sullivan (2011), reliability refers to whether and assessment tool gives the same results each time it is used in the same setting and with the same population. Validity in reference to the assessment instrument refers to the accuracy of the measurement (Sullivan, 2011). Surveys need to be created by someone with the proper credentials to create a survey that measures what it is intended for. Surveys as the data collection instrument need to be reliable and valid for the study results to be credible. To measure the reliability and validity of an assessment tool, a pattern of results across multiple studies should be established.
