Most people don’t know that the idea of race evolved in Spain. Muslims ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula from 711 – 1492; Christian kingdoms crusaded to reconquer the land that today is Spain and Portugal. This was a religious, not a racial struggle, and the church supported the monarchy by certifying Spaniards’ “purity of blood”–one drop of Jewish or Muslim blood meant that you were less than a Christian Spaniard. In 1492, Jews and Muslims were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula, and Columbus landed on what is now DR/Haiti, opening the way for the conquest of the Americas, built by millions of enslaved Africans and their descendants. The idea of “purity of blood,” meaning Whiteness or social status, and Blackness (a category that originally indicated Jews and Muslims), meaning that you should be enslaved, comes from Spain.
